METEC provides practical towing training at our private facility in Bayswater North, Melbourne. Choose a three-hour Private Practical Towing Course for a one-to-one reversing and handling refresher, or a full-day Certified Towing Course for beginners who want practical skills alongside legal and safety requirements. Training is available for caravans, trailers, boats and horse floats, with your own insured tow vehicle and trailer or caravan; a METEC caravan/trailer may be hired if required.
Towing a trailer, caravan, boat or horse float can be a daunting and difficult task for the inexperienced individual.
At METEC we will provide you with practical training and information to help you keep everything in check when on the road, reversing into a specified area, braking, and everything in-between. Whether you are towing for the first time or upgrading to a larger van, we'll help keep you safe on the road.
Which METEC Towing Course Is Right for You?
- Choose the Private Practical Towing Course if you already have some towing experience and want focused, one-to-one practical help with reversing, parking and safe handling. It is a privately scheduled three-hour course for one or two participants per caravan.
- Choose the Certified Towing Course if you are new to towing a caravan or want a full-day course covering practical towing skills, legal and safety checks, connection procedures, braking setup and monitored manoeuvres.
- Bring your own insured towing vehicle and caravan or trailer. If you cannot bring a caravan or trailer, ask about hiring a METEC caravan/trailer for the stated additional hire fee.

PRIVATE PRACTICAL TOWING COURSE
COST: $495.00 PER CARAVAN WITH ONE OR TWO PARTICIPANTS
Our Private Practical Tow Only course is an ideal refresher for people with some prior towing experience.
Your private three hour course is conducted at the METEC facility at Bayswater North and will be personally scheduled for you in consultation with our staff.
This course is 1 on 1 with an accredited METEC Instructor and is almost entirely practical.
Participants are required to bring their own insured, towing vehicle and caravan/trailer.
A METEC caravan/trailer is available for hire if required. Hire fee is $110.00.
COURSE OUTLINE:
- Welcome and introduction.
- Brief inspection of correct coupling including chains & cables
- Predominantly practical training in reversing and parking techniques.
- Safe handling techniques

CERTIFIED TOWING COURSE
COST: $725.00 PER CARAVAN WITH ONE OR TWO PARTICIPANTS
On successful completion, Tow-Ed will issue a digital Statement of Attainment for AURGTA001 — Drive and manoeuvre trailers. This course is delivered by METEC with RTO training partner Getabout Training Services (RTO ID: 90547). A hard copy Statement of Attainment can be issued on request.
Our METEC Certified Towing course, in partnership with Tow-Ed, is an ideal course for beginners. This course is designed to teach practical towing skills plus legal and safety requirements when towing a caravan.
This full day course is conducted at our private METEC facility at 112 Colchester Road, Bayswater North.
Participants are required to bring their own insured, towing vehicle and caravan. A hire caravan is available at an additional cost of $110.00 if you are unable to bring your own van.
COURSE OUTLINE:
- Welcome and introduction.
- Legal and safety checks.
- Correct connection / disconnection procedures.
- Monitored forward towing and straight reversing.
- Circle reverse, reverse angle parking.
- Brake set up, brake controller adjustment, manual override.
- Instructor accompanied drive on private roads at the METEC facility.
- Question time, completion of paperwork.

We are located in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs, just under 15 minutes from the Canterbury Road exit on EastLink, and at the gateway to the Yarra Valley. Our private facility provides a dedicated setting for practical towing instruction, including reversing, parking, connection procedures and instructor-accompanied driving for the Certified Towing Course.
What You Can Practise During METEC Towing Training
Depending on the course you choose, training may cover:
- Connecting and disconnecting: a brief inspection of correct coupling, including chains and cables.
- Legal and safety checks: practical preparation before towing a caravan or trailer.
- Forward towing and handling: monitored forward towing and safe handling techniques.
- Reversing and parking: straight reversing, circle reversing, reverse-angle parking and reversing into a specified area.
- Braking setup: brake-controller adjustment and manual override in the Certified Towing Course.
- Practical guidance: instruction with an accredited METEC Instructor, including an instructor-accompanied drive on private roads for the Certified Towing Course.
The Private Practical Towing Course is predominantly practical and focused on reversing, parking and handling. The Certified Towing Course includes the broader legal, safety and practical course components listed above.
